2023 – CARNIVAL!

(PANO) See that big ride in the middle? That’s the side and back of Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack. It’s 3 short blocks from where I live and it’s where my siblings and I were baptized.
See all the asphalt that the other rides are on? That’s where I went to school from Grades 1 through 4. It was a big building that housed an elementary school (Holy Trinity School) and a high school (Brownson High).
It’s now the church parking lot.
I’m not sure when the church began sponsoring carnivals in May, but I’ve been shooting them on and off for over 20 years.
It’s been a while – what with the pandemic and all – so when I saw this sign on the old convent, I decided to head on over there:
I went at around 6:30 on Thursday – while the sun was still out – to see what was there and if it had changed much.
It hadn’t.
There was The Zipper in its usual spot on the northern end:
And there was the Round Up right next to it:
It seems that the name on the sign acquired a couple of extra letters, thanks to the motion of making it a certain type of image.
(PANO) I don’t know what this one was called (“Traffic Jam”?), but it doesn’t seem like there’s all that much interest in it:
I have no idea how this guy wound up with a carnival on his head:
(PANO) So THIS is where all those cartoons live:
I think I’d better come back when it’s dark out, so my camera can ride the lights.
And two nights later, I did.
(PANO) From across the street:
(PANO) Here’s where you go to stuff yourself with carnival food:
(ALWAYS a great idea before you go on rides that spin at hypersonic speed!)
And here are those rides………
The Zipper from straight ahead:
From underneath:
The Zipper at gorgeous full speed:
Unfortunately, it went WAY too fast and exploded into many pieces that littered the lot:
Fortunately, there was a church right across the street in which to pray for the victims’ souls.
Time to check out the Round Up in action.
It starts off innocently enough:
(PANO) But – like the Zipper – it started spinning at insane speeds…………..fast enough to become intensely green-hot (the multi-dimensional equivalent of “red-hot”) and melted off into one of those dimensions (a kid-friendly one, I hope):
I’m running out of rides to shoot……………….oh look, here’s one:
I’m not sure what this one’s called, but I DO know it started off with kids in individual swings that were hanging off the round upper section. Who knows where they are now……….but the ride looks great!
Is there anything (or anyone) left to photograph?
Oh wait……………I see one rather tame ride with the last two kids at this carnival sliding down it:
They look like nice kids, so – to end this post on a happy note – I won’t show you what awaited them at the bottom.
See you next year!
