2023 – Boot Camp at the Hackensack Middle School?
…………………………………………(ignore April 30, 2017 publish date – this was published on August 27, 2023)
Let me state right off the bat that I have no knowledge that this event is officially referred to as “boot camp” – that’s my doing.
I was in my kitchen making breakfast last week when I heard someone barking out orders outside in a loud, military fashion at 8am.
The sound was coming from the direction of the Middle School, but school was not in session on August 21, so I looked out a south-facing window and saw adults wearing army green tops and khakis standing over on-their-backs teens who were doing leg lifts:
I took that shot at 8:05am.
The first words that popped into my head were “boot camp”. I think the next guess was “junior ROTC”, but I really had no idea what it was.
“Shoot first and ask questions later”…………….and I should mention that I’m almost 2 blocks away when I took these photos.
Time to get the heart pumping:
Dress inspection (I hope not):
And they’re off!
I think I see a familiar figure on the left in a white cap and holding a coffee cup. It’s Hackensack’s mayor, John Labrosse, so this must be an official City function:
These are obviously consecutive pictures, so I joined them:
Nice to see that most of the prone youth are staying hydrated:
With apologies to the flag, it’s the first time I’ve ever been mass-saluted!
Thanks, guys!
And that ain’t all! SIMULTANEOUSLY, their photographer included me in this reverse image!
Thank you, sir!
At this point, everyone’s in uniform………..well, uniformly-dressed, anyway. I’m not gonna pretend I know everything they’re doing at this point, so I’m just gonna run the rest of the day’s pictures – 14 of them – without captions:
Rinse and repeat on Tuesday – no need to duplicate what I shot the day before (and I don’t think they were there as long as on Monday). Here are 6 pix:
The law of diminishing returns repeats on Wednesday (they weren’t there very long at all – 3 pix!):
Note: if the second pic shows down linemen, they’re ALL offside!
Finally, if you told me that they were there for only two minutes on Thursday, I wouldn’t be able to disagree with you, so we finish with ONE picture!
I don’t know if anything was scheduled for Friday at the Middle School, but it’s a moot point because it rained.
At some point during the week, I contacted a few knowledgeable people in town and found out that this group was the Hackensack, NJ, Police Department Youth Academy.
You can find out more about their activities this past week here:
https://www.facebook.com/HackensackPoliceDepartment/
They visited some interesting places during the week, with the Middle School probably being the least interesting of all of them, so check it out.
And NO – I did not find the words “boot camp” anywhere on the FB page.
